How to start learning to type properly

Learning to type is mostly about building a habit, not a skill you rush. Start slowly, use the right fingers and let speed arrive on its own.

Set up before you type

  • Sit tall, with your feet flat on the floor and your back supported.
  • Keep your wrists floating, not resting on the desk edge.
  • Put the screen at eye level so your neck stays relaxed.
  • Place your fingers on the home row: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right.

Accuracy before speed

Every mistake you repeat is practice for the mistake. Slow down until you can type a sentence with almost no errors, and then very gradually increase your pace. Aim for 95% accuracy before you worry about words per minute.
