Why the home row is everything

Every good touch typist returns to the home row after every key. If that return is slow or inaccurate, everything else suffers.

What the home row actually does

ASDF (left hand) and JKL; (right hand) are the anchor. Every other key is reached from here and the fingers return immediately. When the home row is solid, the rest of the keyboard becomes much easier.

How to practise effectively

  1. 1Keep your eyes on the screen the whole time.
  2. 2Type slowly enough that you never look down.
  3. 3Focus on returning to the home position after every word.
  4. 4Do short daily sessions rather than long occasional ones.

Where to go next

Once the home row feels automatic, move to the Word Typing Game and then the Typing Speed Test.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I stay on home row practice?

Most beginners benefit from several days to a couple of weeks of focused home-row work before adding the rest of the keyboard.

Can I look at the keyboard while practising?

Try not to. Looking down is the main habit this drill is designed to break.
