Mastering the top row: Q W E R T Y U I O P

The top row is where most beginners start to look down. The keys sit one row above your resting fingers, and a small error in the reach lands you on the wrong letter.

How to practise it

  1. 1Rest your fingers on the home row, then reach straight up to the key and straight back.
  2. 2Keep your hand still and move only the finger needed.
  3. 3Say the word in your head before you type it, so the whole word becomes one movement.
  4. 4Slow down whenever a streak breaks. Clean repetitions are the aim.

Why this drill uses real words

Words such as "power", "write" and "territory" use only top row letters. Practising real words trains the same patterns you use in daily writing, instead of random letter strings that never appear in your texts.

Frequently asked questions

Which keys are on the top row?

The top letter row is Q W E R T Y U I O P. The number row sits above it and is practised separately.

Why do I hit the wrong keys on the top row?

Usually the whole hand moves instead of one finger. Keep your hand anchored on the home row and let only the finger reach up.
