Percentage decrease
25%
A 20% decrease needs a 25% increase to get back to where you started, because the base has changed.
A percentage decrease measures how much smaller a number has become relative to where it began. It is how reductions in price, weight, spending and website traffic are normally described.
Subtract the new value from the old value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. In short: percentage decrease = (old - new) / old x 100. A price that falls from 120 to 90 has dropped by 30, and 30 divided by 120 is 0.25, so the decrease is 25%.
As with any percentage change, the original value is the base. Dividing by the lower, newer figure overstates the drop.
| Start | End | Decrease | Calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 | 60 | 25% | (80 - 60) / 80 x 100 |
| 500 | 450 | 10% | (500 - 450) / 500 x 100 |
| 1,200 | 900 | 25% | (1,200 - 900) / 1,200 x 100 |
| 75 | 15 | 80% | (75 - 15) / 75 x 100 |
Use the Percentage Increase Calculator when a figure has gone up, the Discount Calculator to price a sale item, or the general Percentage Calculator for everyday percentage questions.
Subtract the new value from the old value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. For 120 falling to 90, that is (120 - 90) / 120 x 100 = 25%.
No. A value can fall to zero, which is a 100% decrease, but not below it unless the number goes negative, which is a different situation.
